The “fundamental maxim of republican government,” states Alexander Hamilton in Federalist Papers No. 22, “requires that the sense of the majority should prevail.” Now Utah’s self-described “Republican Party” has indicated by its support of unrepresentative caucuses that it is not only indifferent to majority rule but downright hostile to it.
Ironically, this party has become the enemy of republican government, as Hamilton understood the term. Unless Utah’s Republican Party can embrace “the fundamental maxim of republican government,” it should change its name.
