Then football season ended in disappointment. And the night his basketball season ended with more disappointment still, the Grantsville senior sent his baseball coach a text message.
On Saturday night, with the sun setting over Gates Field, Johnson threw the final strike of his high school career, thrust both arms toward the sky and quickly found himself at the bottom of a pile of his teammates near the pitcher’s mound.
“We did it,” Johnson said after the Grantsville Cowboys beat the Carbon Dinos 12-4 to capture the Class 3A state title.
The Cowboys (25-3) entered the tournament as the top-ranked team and cruised through American Leadership Academy, South Sevier, Manti and Carbon twice to capture the school’s sixth baseball championship and its first since 2014.
