Defending MLS champion Toronto defeats Real Salt Lake, 3-1

Real Salt Lake saw its slow start to the season continue to crawl on as it lost to host Toronto 3-1 at BMO Field on Friday. RSL slid to a 1-2-1 record to start the season.

Toronto opened the scoring with a penalty conversion. The foul was called on center back Justen Glad, who knocked down Jozy Altidore in the box. Altidore took the penalty kick, and his line drive found the back of the net even as RSL goalie Nick Rimando guessed right.

Altidore’s penalty conversion was Toronto’s first MLS goal of the season. The defending champions were shut out by Columbus and Montreal in back-to-back league matches leading up to Friday’s match.
