Reverting to the classic (for RSL anyway) diamond midfield surprised many fans when it was announced, and realistically had the potential for 2 possible outcomes (with a large muddy gray area somewhere in between). If everything went perfectly, Kyle Beckerman would roll back at least six years on his legs, Zac MacMath would channel Nick Rimando, and Real Salt Lake would completely surprise Minnesota United to pull off an amazing win. However, if RSL didn’t have the necessary facets to pull off the diamond, well that’s the result we ended up with. The diamond did start out well enough, and the Loons did look surprised for about 15 minutes, but they managed to adapt and counter; that threw off whatever Coach Freddy Juarez’ plan was for the game.
