Las Vegas • BYU’s women’s basketball team hasn’t had many short stays at the West Coast Conference tournament, but coach Jeff Judkins’ crew suffered a rare one Thursday night.
For just the second time since they joined the league seven years ago, the Cougars lost their opening game, falling 61-56 to San Diego at Orleans Arena.
The third-seeded Cougars (16-14) lost for the third time this season to sixth-seeded San Diego (16-14).
The Toreros dominated the offensive glass and scored 20 second-chance points to move on to Monday’s semifinals.
Malia Nawahine and Brenna Chase scored 16 points apiece for BYU.
