PROVIDENCE -- Providence College dug itself a hole that it couldn't climb out of in a 4-3 loss to 12th-ranked Vermont on Friday night at Schneider Arena.
Trailing 4-1 at the start of the third period, the Friars outshot the Catamounts, 10-1, in the third period and scored twice, but it wasn't enough.
Vermont (15-6-2 overall and 7-3-1 in Hockey East) jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the first period on scores by Matt Alvaro at 12:16 and Jarrid Privitera at 13:51.
Providence (9-8-4 overall, 1-6-2 in Hockey East) cut the lead in half on Vimal Sukumaren's goal at 15:34 of the first, assisted by Bryan Lemos and Jacob Bryson.
