Upset of top-seeded Maryland has PC men's soccer in holiday spirit

PROVIDENCE — The college soccer world is one of many places where players entering the athletic prime of their lives willingly give up a traditional Thanksgiving feast with their families.

There was little longing for home Tuesday at Providence College’s Anderson Stadium, with afternoon training set to commence in brisk conditions. The Friars were one of just 16 teams in the nation still coming out to practice with the holiday approaching, another NCAA Tournament match on the horizon this weekend.

It looked like an unlikely proposition as night fell Sunday in Maryland. The top-ranked and top-seeded Terrapins held a three-goal lead over Providence late in the second half when Friars midfielder Julian Gressel fired home his second goal of the game, touching off the most remarkable of comebacks.
