UMass 5, Providence 2: Minutemen take control in third period

AMHERST, Mass. — Austin Albrecht’s goal 1:43 into the third period snapped a 2-2 tie and UMass added a pair of empty-net goals as the Minutemen defeated Providence College, 5-2, on Thursday night at the Mullins Center.

The two teams play against on Saturday night at 7 p.m. at Schneider Arena in Providence.

Providence found itself in a 2-0 hole just 7:39 into the contest. UMass’ Mitchell Chaffee scored 3:21 into the game and Oliver Chau scored 4:18 later off assists from Chaffee and Josh Couturier.

Providence cut the deficit to 2-1 right before the end of the first period as Ben Mirageas scored on the power-play off assists from Erik Foley and Kasper Bjorkqvist.
