AMHERST, Mass. — Traditional Hockey East heavyweights Boston University and Boston College may be down so far this season, but UMass, not known for making a lot of noise, is most definitely up.
On a goal with 1:25 left in the game, the ninth-ranked Minutemen edged fourth-ranked Providence College, 3-2, before an enthusiastic crowd of 6,357 at the Mullins Center on Thursday night.
Freshman defenseman Ty Farmer was the hero, whipping a 55-foot wrister through traffic that beat PC goalie Hayden Hawkey (18 saves).
It was a tough loss for the Friars, who trailed by two goals 10 minutes into the game, but fought back to tie it on power play goals by Jacob Bryson in the second period and Kasper Bjorkqvist in the third.
