PC Friars appear improved but so is bulk of an older Big East

NEW YORK – Let’s cut right to the chase.

The Big East wasn’t very good last year. Yes, the games played super tight, Madison Square Garden owned its terrific buzz in that always entertaining week in March and all 10 teams played in a post-season tournament.

Yet when it was time for the league’s best to show up once the games really counted, no one stepped forward. One NCAA Tournament victory (Villanova over St. Mary’s) marked an all-time low for the Big East and, to be frank, is embarrassing.

It’s also an outlier and doesn’t look to be repeated anytime soon.
