PROVIDENCE – Live and learn.
That’s one of many credos the Providence Friars will play by in this early season. Thou shalt not be wed to only one defense is another.
For the first 24 minutes of Tuesday’s game against Holy Cross, the Friars tried their best to stick with the Crusaders in a man-to-man defense. Things didn’t go well, at all.
Down 46-37, Ed Cooley switched to a zone defense. The move worked wonders as the Crusaders froze, the Friars spurted and allowed the 6,042 fans to go home happy after a 70-61 victory.
The defensive switch sparked a stunning 20-2 run that turned the game in PC’s favor.
