PROVIDENCE — It’s pothole season around here and Providence College veered into a deep one in the first period on Saturday afternoon.
Usually airtight on defense, the Friars packed two weeks’ worth of mistakes into a five-minute stretch and fell behind by three goals before their game against Minnesota State was 12 minutes old.
But just when it looked like their season might end with blown-out tires, PC roared back to hang six straight goals on Minnesota State in a 6-3 win in the opener of the East Regional.
Before a big, pro-PC crowd at the Dunkin’ Donuts Center, the Friars went 4-for-7 on the power play, scoring twice during a pivotal stretch in the third period after a Mavericks player was hit with a five-minute major for contact to the head.
