PROVIDENCE — The Providence College men’s soccer team defeated Delaware, 2-0, on Thursday night in the opening round of the NCAA Tournament on Chapey Field at Anderson Stadium.
With the win, the Friars will play at No. 1 overall seed Maryland on Sunday. Providence improves to 13-6 with the win, while the Blue Hens end their season at 12-8-1.
The Friars struck first in the eighth minute on a seemingly innocent play. Senior Julian Gressel sent a pass too far ahead into the box that Delaware goalkeeper Todd Morton tried to clear. A miscommunication between Morton and defender John Schroeder led to Morton’s clear deflecting back towards his own net.
