NCAA soccer tournament: PC advances after 2-1 win at Creighton

OMAHA, Neb. — Providence didn’t need to rally from three goals down, but the Friars still showed some late magic Saturday night.

Danny Griffin scored from 30 yards to break a tie with 7:28 to play, giving Providence a 2-1 win over Creighton in the third round of the NCAA men’s soccer tournament.

The win came six days after Providence, which reaches the quarterfinals for the second time in three years, erased a 4-1 deficit in the final 21 minutes to stun No. 1 national seed Maryland in the second round.

“It was unbelievable that we came back from 4-1 down, but we kind of said coming into this week we wanted to put that win behind us,” said Providence senior Julian Gressel, who scored in the first goal and assisted on Griffin goal.
