Merrimack 5, PC 2: Friars fall apart in the third period

NORTH ANDOVER, Mass. – Tyler Irvine’s pair of goals paced a five-goal third period for Merrimack in a 5-2 win over Providence College on Friday afternoon at Lawler Rink.

Providence falls to 4-5-2 (1-3-1 HEA), while the Warriors get their first Hockey East win of the season to improve to 6-6-3 (1-3-2 HEA). Hayden Hawkey made 16 saves to fall to 4-5-2, while Drew Vogler improved to 5-5-3 with 21 stops. The Friars suffered their first loss to the Warriors since Nov. 8, 2014, a span of five games.

Providence came up empty on its first power play of the day, but the momentum carried over into their second chance as North Andover native Brian Pinho camped out front and deflected a Jake Walman point shot into the back of the net at 10:16.
