NEW YORK — It’s not easy being a college basketball coach these days.

It used to be a bit more pleasant when the hoop world happily turned a blind eye to the ills of the sport. It’s easy, after all, to fall for the games, the wacky crowds, the bands and the craziness of the sport’s crowning celebration, March Madness.

Those days are again right around the corner but the recent FBI investigation that’s shined a light on the tangled web of overzealous coaches, sleazy agents, sneaker companies and others looking for their slice of basketball’s billion-dollar pie has cast a cloud over the sport.
