Every big-time college coach pays lip service to the importance of academics for their student-athletes. But, in many cases, that’s all it is — just talk. They say the right thing, but don’t always do right by their players. They're often more concerned about keeping their players eligible than they are about helping them earn a meaningful degree.
Not Ed Cooley, who, along with his wife, Nurys, a former Providence police officer, have pledged to donate $500,000 from his new, "lifetime" contract to the academic portion of the Ruane Friar Development Center.
