Jim Donaldson: Friars' fun ride comes to end

  • Friars coach Nate Leaman instructs his players in the first period of Friday's regional NCAA semifinal game in Worcester. PC fell, 2-1, to Minnesota Duluth in double overtime.

  • WORCESTER — Nick Saracino’s shot from the slot hit the crossbar.
The game was 4:16 into overtime and, after three tough, grueling, leg-wearying, heart-stopping periods, it could have ended that suddenly.
Providence College was that close — two inches, an inch, maybe even less than that — from advancing to the NCAA Northeast Regional finals.
That close to keeping alive their bid to become the first team to win back-to-back NCAA championships since Denver did it in 2004 and 2005.
