Friars Journal: PC’s zone defenses corral St. John’s shooters

JAMAICA, N.Y. — Ed Cooley did a good job keeping his go-to defense in the opening Big East game of the season a secret.

The Friars came out and threw a few different zone defenses Thursday night at St. John’s in the conference opener for both teams. PC played very little zone through its 13 nonleague games but Cooley took notice of the Red Storm’s 32 percent accuracy rate from downtown and gave it a shot.

The move paid off handsomely. St. John’s shot the ball well in the first half with seven threes but crashed and burned in the second half.
