INDIANAPOLIS — The well-balanced Big East is eating itself apart.
Butler began Tuesday night clinging to hopes of a fifth straight NCAA Tournament bid but left Hinkle Fieldhouse with other goals. The Bulldogs lost at home to Providence, 73-67 in overtime, to fall to 6-9 in league play. They now look an awful lot like several other Big East teams.
With two weeks to go, there are now four teams with six wins and five teams within two games of fourth place. Home teams are only 42-32 in league play, a sign of youthful programs that cannot protect their homecourts.
