Diafra Sakho started West Ham’s quarter-final at Arsenal on the bench after a dispute with manager David Moyes about his place in the team and a £50,000 bonus.
Sakho was poised to start at the Emirates until he became embroiled in an emotional exchange with Moyes about why the new manager had not been picking him in the Premier League.
Afterwards, the 27-year-old striker said he no longer wanted to play and preferred to go home, but he was persuaded to stay and take his place among the substitutes.
Andre Ayew and Javier Hernandez led the line for the Hammers as they lost 1-0.
