U.S. youth international Lynden Gooch made his Premier League debut Saturday, earning the start as Sunderland opened the 2016-17 campaign against Manchester City.
The 20-year-old California native was deployed on the left side of midfield at the Etihad Stadium, marking just his second competitive match for the Black Cats since signing with the club's academy in 2012. His first appearance came off the bench in a League Cup match in August 2015.
Gooch also has earned minutes over a pair of loan spells, playing for fifth-tier Gateshead in 2015 and third-tier Doncaster earlier this year.
