The RFU have blamed ‘bomb blast design requirements’ as one of the reasons for their East Stand development at Twickenham spiralling more than £10million over budget.
The project to bring all Twickenham’s booming corporate hospitality business under one roof was expected to cost £55m before it opens for this year’s autumn internationals.
But the proposed spend has now risen to £65.5m and could go higher because of the need to make the structure capable of withstanding a terrorist bomb attack. There are also extra fire safety requirements for the building’s cladding following the Grenfell disaster.
To add to Twickenham concerns are findings from a health and safety audit by the British Safety Council.
