Sunderland have asked to take Bordeaux's Diego Contento on loan in a bid to solve their left back problem.
They were rebuffed in their approach for Bryan Oviedo at Everton and stopped short of a bid for Swansea's Neil Taylor.
Dutchman Patrick van Aanholt is set to link up with former Sunderland boss Sam Allardyce at Selhurst Park, which has prompted David Moyes to scramble for a player to plug the left side of his defence.
After moving on from Oviedo and Taylor the Stadium of Light boss has turned to Contento.
