Sunderland defender Paddy McNair could be out for the season after suffering knee injury against Hull

Sunderland could be without defender Paddy McNair for the rest of the season after the defender suffered a cruciate knee ligament injury against Hull.

The full extent of the injury is not yet known, but if the ligament is found to be ruptured he will require an operation, with the lengthy rehabilitation time likely ruling him out for the rest of Sunderland's season.

The 21-year-old, who joined the Black Cats from Manchester United in the summer, suffered the injury as he closed down Hull's Curtis Davies on the edge of the penalty area, just before half-time in their Premier League clash on Saturday.
