Steven Gerrard felt Aston Villa were denied a penalty as he bemoaned two refereeing decisions that ruined his Anfield return.
The 41-year-old found himself in previously unchartered territory on Saturday, as he stood in the away dugout trying to mastermind a performance from Aston Villa that would frustrate Liverpool and check his old club’s title challenge.
For long periods, it seemed Gerrard might be successful but Villa were undone in the second half when Mohamed Salah hit his 21st goal of the season with a penalty that he converted after being bundled over by Tyrone Mings.
