REVEALED: VAR did NOT check whether Fabinho had fouled Oli McBurnie for Sheffield United penalty... with officials instead focusing on whether tackle was inside or outside the box

There was yet more VAR controversy in Liverpool's match against Sheffield United on Saturday, with the system giving a penalty without actually checking whether the incident was a foul or not.

The referee had originally given a free kick just outside the area, which VAR corrected to a penalty based on where the foul happened.

However the Premier League has confirmed that VAR only checked whether the incident happened inside the box, and not whether it was actually a foul.
