REVEALED: Premier League explain WHY Cody Gakpo's Liverpool equaliser against Aston Villa was disallowed - and why it had to be checked on the screen despite it being an offside call

The Premier League have issued a statement explaining why Cody Gakpo's equalising goal for Liverpool during Saturday's Premier League clash with Aston Villa was disallowed.

Jacob Ramey had put the visitors 1-0 ahead in the 27th minute, before Dutch forward Gakpo appeared to have got the Reds back on level pegging. The goal was chalked off following a lengthy VAR check, however.

The decision was met with confusion, though, with the goal at first appearing to be legitimate. Trent Alexander-Arnold crossed the ball in, before Luis Diaz headed the ball into Enzri Konsa, then rebounding to Virgil van Dijk.
