Premier League not ready to allow referees to speak to media after games

The Premier League are not ready to allow referees to talk to media after matches because they feel officials are too emotionally invested and need time to clear their heads first.

Mike Riley, current chief of the Professional Game Match Officials Ltd (PGMOL), instead has former referee Dermot Gallagher explain the reasoning behind decisions on TV.

Mark Clattenburg will be allowed to speak to journalists in Saudi Arabia but Riley is not yet prepared to permit referees in England to break their silence.

Asked whether officials talking to media after matches might help, the 52-year-old said: ‘There are better ways of achieving that than giving the microphone to the referee immediately after a game.
