Richard Scudamore, Premier League executive chairman, will add to his considerable sporting influence by co-chairing the government's new Sports Business Council alongside minister of sport Tracey Crouch.
Membership of the council will be drawn from Whitehall and leaders in sport. It will look at what can be done to drive the sports economy and create jobs.
As co-chair of the group alongside Crouch, Scudamore has been brought in to unleash untapped potential in Britain's sporting economy by bringing together the government and leading sports figures from the public and private sectors.
'Sport has long been recognised for the cultural and social benefits it brings to the country,' Scudamore said.
