PGMOL appoints first ever technical director amid season of Premier League VAR controversies and player confrontations, as Howard Webb looks to improve officiating standards

Howard Webb has appointed a first ever technical director at the Professional Game Match Officials Limited (PGMOL) as he continues his revamp of the organisation.

Referee standards and relations with players have come under the microscope this season following a string of controversial incidents as well as decisions despite the introduction of VAR technology in the last few years.

Former Premier League referee Webb came into his role as chief refereeing officer in December and is already looking at making major changes in a bid to restore some trust in match officials as well as in-game decision making.
