Matthaus backing England to make World Cup final

Former World Cup winner Lothar Matthaus has backed England to progress to the World Cup final and face Brazil in the winner-takes-all tie in Moscow.

The 57-year-old captained West Germany to the 1990 World Cup and is one of only two players to play in five separate tournaments. He has been heavily critical of Germany's 2018 World Cup exploits, but has been impressed by England's young squad and thinks they have the ability to go all the way to the final.

England are just three games from lifting the trophy, having set up a quarter-final date with Sweden on Saturday after their dramatic penalty shootout win over Colombia.
