Erik ten Hag hoped the days of Manchester United 'make do and mend' had finished.
Last season saw plenty of quick-fixes with Wout Weghorst and Marcel Sabitzer recruited on loan in January to plug gaps caused by injuries, suspensions and an intense fixture list.
United's manager had to make do with all manner of workarounds, notably in midfield and attack, due to a lack of depth in the squad.
The expensive summer signings of Rasmus Hojlund and Mason Mount were supposed to have solved much of this but in true whack-a-mole style, United now have unforeseen issues at left-back.
