The banner held proudly aloft in a corner of the Arthur Wait stand provided the clearest indication of where Liverpool minds are at present.

There, leaping out off a red banner in gleaming white, were the years of the immortals – '77, '78, '81, 84, '05 – with a message underneath: 'We live for the nights we remember'; there is hope that, come May 26, the digits '18 will be added.

Liverpool's trip to Crystal Palace was, for Jurgen Klopp, the biggest game of the season, an opportunity to solidify their place in the top four and take a giant step towards being in the Champions League next season.
