Brighton claimed their first victory in 10 Premier League outings thanks to Neal Maupay's first-half strike at Leeds.
The Frenchman lost Luke Ayling at the back post to tap home a low ball across the box from Alexis Mac Allister.
The hosts struggled to create chances while the visitors hit the bar and could have doubled their lead through Leandro Trossard, but they held on to inflict a third straight defeat on Marcelo Bielsa's side in all competitions.
