Jermain Defoe set for Manchester City opener as Sunderland striker targets quickfire start

Jermain Defoe has won his race to be fit for Saturday’s season opener at Manchester City.

The Sunderland striker has missed pre-season under David Moyes with a thigh strain and the new boss had feared kicking off without a recognised frontman.

Fabio Borini - who played on the wing last year - or 17-year-old Joel Asoro would have deputised, but Defoe is now in line to start against Pep Guardiola’s side.

And last season’s 18-goal top scorer says the Black Cats can no longer make the sort of sluggish start which has seen them fight relegation in recent years.
