The Premier League's first woman manager will need huge commitment from the club which hires her, to protect against inevitable misogyny and abuse, the pundit and former England international Karen Carney has said.

Carney described how she was warned before starting broadcasting work to brace herself for 'a barrage of abuse' - and that a manager breaking through the glass ceiling to manage at the top level of the men's game would experience exponentially more.

Carney told a debate event in London: 'There's so much we have got to do to let the first woman succeed.
