Huddersfield's rookie recruitment is paying off for David Wagner after opening day win at Crystal Palace

Huddersfield's manager-of-the-moment David Wagner has admitted the club's policy of signing Premier League rookies was born out of necessity because he felt he would be unable to attract established stars to the John Smith's Stadium.

Perhaps the most astonishing part of Town's 3-0 win at Crystal Palace on the opening day was that only one of their players, Thomas Ince, had appeared in the English top flight before.

The other nine players brought in during a busy summer transfer window, the most notable being £11million Montpellier striker Steve Mounie, are calculated gambles after the club's unexpected promotion via the play-offs.
