The introduction of video technology in English football will be discussed at a top-level meeting at Wembley on Friday.
It is understood the International Football Association Board will discuss approving trials of in-match video reviews during games organised by the Football Association - including the FA Cup - during the meeting.
No timescales as to when the first experiments would take place, but next season’s Community Shield at Wembley has been mooted as a potential start date.
Talk of video assistant referees has increased in recent weeks in response to scrutiny of match day officials, who have faced worsening criticism for getting difficult decisions wrong.
