Ex-Southampton and Italy striker Dani Osvaldo says he quit football as he prefers 'barbecue and beer to money'

Dani Osvaldo, the former Southampton and Italy striker who is now the lead singer of a band, claimed he quit football in 2016 so he could eat more barbecue food and drink more beer.

Osvaldo, 31, scored four goals in 14 appearances for Italy and three in 13 during a ill-fated move to Southampton in 2013 for £13million. He returned to Italy in January 2014, with Juventus on loan, after a training group bust-up with then Saints captain Jose Fonte.

He then played for Porto and Boca Juniors but had his contract terminated after being found smoking in the club dressing room in May 2016.
