Arsenal captain Per Mertesacker's potential return to former club Werder Bremen has been backed by team captain Clemens Fritz as the German nears the end of his contract at the Emirates.
The 32-year-old centre-back only has a few months left on his current deal as he continues his recovery from cartilage damage sustained during pre-season. Mertesacker has stated that he would be open to a return to the Bundesliga should Arsenal decide not to offer him an extension.
'It would be a good thing for the club,' Fritz told Bild. 'We've talked about it [a return to Bremen],' he added.
