Neither side managed to do much of anything in the second half, but Argentina leave 4-0 winners having done more than enough in the first. Martinez recorded a hat-trick in the opening period (17’, 22’, 39’) and that, combined with Paredes penalty strike in the 33rd minute proved to be more than enough to carry them past a toothless Mexico. El Tri managed to hold possession for 63.2 per cent of the match, but lacked any real creative impetus and failed to record a single shot on target all day. The defence didn’t fare any better with Araujo having a tremendously dismal day, making three clear mistakes, all of which led to goals for Argentina.
