Portland Trail Blazers broadcast statistical analyst Tom Haberstroh wrote an eye-opening article for Yahoo Sports that has spread across “basketball internet” over the past few days. Haberstroh researched the legend of Michael Jordan’s 1987-88 season that culminated with a Defensive Player of the Year trophy, and MJ’s reputation as the best all-around player in the world.
The biggest thing he seemed to confirm: That home statisticians were sometimes part of the marketing department for their team.
Jordan’s home statistics, especially for “stocks” (a portmanteau for steals and blocks), were almost unrealistically higher than his road statistics.
