The Seattle SuperSonics only won a single NBA title - in 1979, two years after the Blazers won their lone championship - and they wouldn’t have been able to do it without 6’2” guard Gus Johnson who passed away Wednesday at the age of 71.

Jenna West of The Athletic (subscription required) writes about Johnson and his impact on an era of basketball much different than today, but that was critical in helping the NBA become the global force it eventually became.

Williams earned the nickname “The Wizard” thanks to his speed and athleticism as a dynamic scoring guard.
