NBA Draft: Why trading for rights to Gary Trent Jr. doesn’t make sense

Neil Olshey and the rest of Portland’s staff had one pick in the loaded 2018 NBA Draft. As many expected, they therefore engaged in a trade on the night of the draft. And for the second straight year, it was with the Sacramento Kings.

Last season, Portland swapped picks No. 15 and 20 for Sacramento’s No. 10 pick. The lottery selection became Zach Collins, who averaged 4.4 points and 3.3 rebounds in 66 games.

Olshey’s trade turned out well as Collins displayed an affinity to learn and develop his game. So, the GM decided to call the Kings for more draft night swapping this summer.
