Clyde Drexler’s gold medal from the 1992 Olympics “Dream Team” is up for auction. According to the listing on the auction site, this is the first time a medal from that Team USA men’s basketball squad has been available.
Drexler joined Magic Johnson, Larry Bird, Michael Jordan, and a host of other superstars for the ‘92 Olympic Games, the first in which NBA players were allowed to participate. The super-group went 8-0 on their way to the tournament crown. The spectacle of seeing 11 future Hall-of-Famers (plus Duke star Christian Laettner) assembled on one team is credited with propelling the sport to worldwide prominence, spawning a generation of international players who occupy a full one-quarter of NBA roster spots today.
