PORTLAND, Ore. – In the only Lamar Hunt U.S. Open Cup fourth round match to feature two MLS teams, the Portland Timbers defeated the San Jose Earthquakes, 2-0, Tuesday at Providence Park. Dairon Asprilla and Jack McInerney both scored in the first half as Portland advanced in front of 16,834.
Asprilla put the home side up in the 34th minute after Jack Barmby played in McInerney, who had his first touch deflected by a defender. The ball fell to Asprilla who shot it past San Jose goalkeeper Bryan Meredith, who was unable to control a potential save.
