Richard Miller leans over the barrier in the north end of Providence Park and carefully secures the handmade banner to the wall. Around him other fans follow suit, completely covering the wall with their own intricate homemade banners, each one a unique and personal tribute to the Portland Timbers.
Many of these fans craft a new banner or two-stick for each home game, working for hours individually or in small groups to add their own artful messages to the game day experience.
"It's really important to support football in your own way," said Miller, who works as a graphic designer.
