Mexican sports newspaper The Record published a story yesterday in which 24-year-old right winger Brian Fernandez may be in talks with the Portland Timbers. The Argentine, currently at Liga MX club Necaxa—was to go to Cruz Azul, but the deal fell through. Now, Portland may be competing with other Mexican clubs for his services. Fernandez sparked such interest this year after scoring 15 goals in 27 games, driving his possible transfer fee up to $10-12 million—a tidy profit for Necaxa if they sell him, as they purchased him from Argentinian Racing Club for only $684,000 last July.
