KANSAS CITY, Mo. - The Portland Timbers lost 1-0 to Sporting Kansas City Sunday in a hard-fought game at Children's Mercy Park in Kansas City, Mo. Sporting forward Jacob Peterson's 50th minute header was the difference.
Portland, who had held Sporting to no shots on goal in the first half, had a number of chances in the second half. Off a Diego Valeri free kick in the 68th minute, Lucas Melano floated a header just past the right post. Then on a counter attack in second half stoppage time, Valeri sprung forward Jack McInerney to his left.
